She transforms her textiles into knitwear using the simplest of approaches. By studying the shape, drape and use of traditional garments in many cultures, including the sari, she has developed a style which strikes the difficult balance between complex innovation and simple construction.

For the most part, my designs are unadorned and unembellished leaving the wearer to create the look and feel they want.

The beauty of each item lies in the combination of the fabric, the simple construction and the wearer’s aesthetic

Conceptually, both the textile and garment design is based on the theories of camouflage.  She is most interested in how we feel in, and react to, our environment.  Camouflage is the art of being seen or unseen.  She interprets our instinct for security and safety and aims to fufil these needs in her knitwear.

nielanell’s designs are not made for a certain age, type or size but for those who know that feeling good is as important as looking good.

We have days when we need to feel secure and protected, when we feel quietly content to carry on unnoticed.

At other times we are out there challenging, questioning and full of enthusiasm.

I like to think my clothing can be worn in any situation, adapting easily to any surroundings.

One of my jackets, vaarie, can even be worn upside down, sending out a totally different signal.
