Welcome to nielanell
I am absolutely delighted to launch my new website and online shop. Without any doubt it is has been the most challenging - yet rewarding enterprise I have ever ventured into.
The whole experience has been phenomenal, especially the photo shoot - with so many people involved and thanks to give, that I’ve had to do a behind the scenes piece and issue a news release (available below).

I have learned so many new things on my journey in translating my knitwear from the studio to the screen. Many times I thought I would be beaten by stocktaking, swatches, colour reproduction – not to forget those bl... spreadsheets! At last, here we was worth it.

As well as my own collections, have a look at the specially commissioned, featured for nielanell ranges. These exciting, limited edition collections, from our own Shetland makers and artists, will be a regular highlight of the online shop and they launch with the gorgeous Burra Bears by Wendy Inkster and Paparwark by Cecil Tait.

nielanell is launching online but this does not mean I’ve stopped selling in person! Come and visit the studio to see the full range in all its glory, at special studio prices. In the meantime, if you see anything on the site that you'd like to ask about just give us a call or email.

Finally, to celebrate the launch and encourage you to sign up to our newsletter – for October only – we’re offering 10% off.  You'll receive a discount code in our next newsletter.

The alternative Shetland knitwear

Nielanell is an exciting knitwear studio, based in the small village of Hoswick in Shetland, a place of pilgrimage for those in the know.

Nielanell’s collections - now available online at - combine innovation and artisan tradition in striking designs combining high-quality merino and cashmere with high-tech fibres.

Colourways are rarely repeated, constantly being updated in limited collections and one-off designs. Collections include capes, snoods, boat-neck jumpers, tunic dresses, accessories and home accessories, all designed and produced by a talented, locally based team.

The complex designs and intricate knit structures balance softness and warmth with lightness and fluidity in surprisingly simple, wearable pieces that seem to achieve the impossible, effortlessly fitting and flattering all ages and sizes.

Comfort and practicality are as important as individuality: perfect for those who won’t wear ‘itchy’ wool, ideal for travelling and hand-washable.

Rigg especially, is a distinctive knit with air pockets that create warmth, lightness and bounce, just scrunch it up and shake it out. Available in a versatile range of styles including the most versatile of all, Vaarie, a jacket you can wear upside down.

Designer Niela Kalra explains her approach: “I believe we form relationships with what we wear. I try to design simple styles that we each wear in a different way. My designs look unique on each individual person, purely because we all wear things with our own sensibility.”

The launch of comes on the back of international exposure for Nielanell following the commission to design the official garments for 100 Shetland fiddlers who performed at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August 2014.
