smookies - shetland jumper
The modern Shetland jumper
A hybrid of two classic garments, the Shetland smookie is a descendant of both the fisherman’s smock and the Fair Isle jumper.
They say design what you love... quite simply I love smocks! This is my interpretation in knit of the canvas smock, worn by generations of seafarers, artists, and Sunday potterers. The pattern motif is inspired by the traditions of Fair Isle, Nordic and Shetland knitting.
Contemporary knitwear, made in Hoswick
A really wearable sweater, with special Nielanell details: a stand-up neck and inset storm cuffs. Smookies are a very local production, being made in Hoswick just a few sheds down from Nielanell HQ - by Laurence Odie Knitwear. Read more about the design process
100% British lambswool
Made in Hoswick, Shetland.
Nielanell smookies are available in one size, which fits a 14-18. On smaller figures the smookie is a wee bit more tunic-like.
Although the pattern is ‘all-over’ (like traditional-style Shetland and Fair Isle sweaters), the gentle trapeze shape of the smookie gives a flattering fit.

We recommend that you hand wash using liquid or flakes. you may wish to wash in the machine on a very gentle handwash wool cycle at 30 degrees or less, using very little detergent specifically designed for delicate/wool items – but you need to ensure your washing machine uses a very gentle handwash wool cycle.
